Season kicks off for Pony Club

PONY CLUB has kicked off for another season. This year we are lucky to have Jenny Bevege as our Head Coach. Many of the kids are working towards sitting their D, D+, and C certificates.

Our ‘One Day Event’ is coming up on November 2 and we are still on the lookout for helpers to run this event. You don’t need to be horsey or know anything about the event to be able to help! We are one of the few Pony Clubs that still hold an ODE – it is getting harder and harder to run because of the hoops we need to jump through. However, we are stubborn and determined to keep it going to offer opportunities to our local kids. Our event pulls in around 100 riders from Taranaki to the top of the Waikato. Last year we had 15 of our Pony Club kids competing, and look to have a similar number again this year.

We rely on the great support that we get, not only from our committee and parents but from the wider community – especially from those parents whose kids have grown up and long left the club.

At the moment we are working through an arena upgrade. Unfortunately, our surface is not draining as it needs to, meaning it is a bit like riding through porridge in the winter.

We have been really lucky to receive a grant from the Piopio Charitable Trust, and we will look to find some more funding elsewhere as well.

Our arena is used by the Light Horse Club, other riding groups and individuals. It’s not often you drive by the Domain and there isn’t someone there using the facilities, so it’s important we keep these to a good standard.

We are always keen to welcome new members – just pop along to a rally or get in touch if you want to see what it’s like. You’ll also find us on Facebook.
