Piopio College Update

TENA KOUTOU katoa.

Farewell Rakesh

As we wind down to Term 3 we have had a lot of changes within the kura. Week 7, we farewelled Rakesh Govind and wished him all the best on his new role at Glenfield College.

New Principal Announced
It has just been announced that Ben Draper has been appointed as the new Principal of Piopio College. Many congratulations Ben! We look forward to your leadership and guidance.

Our dedicated Art Teacher, Suzie McKee and a handful of students created the backdrop for our recent Waiwaia Kapahaka celebration. Not only did its vibrant colours welcome all our manuwhiri it also hung with Mana for our kura. Ngā mihi maioha Suzie.

The meaning of the mural
The purple mountain range in the background represents our two Ranges, Herangi and Aorangi with Maunga Kahuwera standing prominently. Flowing through the landscape is the Mokau River, surrounded by the kumara gardens that symbolise the richness of the land. The kete (baskets) of knowledge hold the traditional foods of Piopio - tuna (eel), riwai (potatoes), and kumara. These treasures represent sustenance and cultural heritage. The mural also honours the native birds of the region, featuring the piwakawaka (fantail), tui, pukeko, and kereru, adding a sense of life and movement to the scene.

The use of bright, vibrant colours highlights the fresh beauty and unique essence of our area, capturing its natural splendour and cultural significance.

“Na te whakarongo me te titiro, ka puta mai he kōrero. Ka puta he taonga rongonui me te aroha ki te tangata.”
“From listening to the people and looking, a precious gift, made with aroha, was given to the people”.

80s School Ball Was held recently at the Fat Owl Bar & Eatery. More details and pics in the next issue.
